Kirkuk, Dec.9 (AKnews)- A new power generating plant has been launched in Kirkuk province, an official said.
Dler Samad, spokesman for Kirkuk Provincial Council, told AKnews the new plant, worth of 3.500 billion Iraqi Dinars (almost 2.975 million U.S. Dollar) will supply for Shuwan district, Darman village and the surrounding areas, which are located on the road connecting central Kirkuk to Erbil.
The official did not comment on the capacity of the plant but added the project was funded from the 2010 developmental budget of the province.
The province has already entered a contact with Erbil (capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan region) for supplying Kirkuk with 225 megawatts for five years. There were reports that Kirkuk officials will demand extending the contract to 15 years.
Kirkuk, which sits on 40 of Iraqi oil reserves, will reimburse Erbil from the revenues of its petrodollar.
The province, like the other Iraqi provinces, suffers from electricity shortage. Now the electricity supply has been reduced from 18 to only 14 hours per day.
