The National Security Service announced, on Wednesday, thwarting the smuggling of more than 7 billion dinars, overthrowing currency smuggling networks, and arresting smugglers, including a “senior” officer.
The agency said in a statement seen by Al-Iqtisad News,
“The agency’s detachments carried out a series of specific operations that included (Basra, Baghdad, Diyala, and Salah al-Din) and resulted in the overthrow of a number of smuggler networks and the seizure of large sums of money in both foreign and local currencies.” He added,
"In Baghdad Governorate, according to information from the Basra Security Directorate, the detachments of our agency were able to overthrow one of the most important smugglers, who was exploiting his job position (an officer with the rank of colonel) to carry out smuggling operations and passing money.
He was seized with sums estimated at more than (4) billion dinars, and as a result of his confessions, he was arrested."
Two members of the network accused of smuggling in Basra were found in possession of more than (3) billion dinars prepared for smuggling.” He continued,
"In the provinces of Diyala and Salah al-Din, our detachments were able to dismantle two networks consisting of (7) individuals accused of money speculation and smuggling operations, in addition to
their practice of working with internal money transfers and buying and selling foreign currency without official approvals, as they were found in possession of amounts in both local and foreign currencies."
