Today, Friday (June 28, 2024), political affairs researcher Mujasha Al-Tamimi commented on transforming investment and service projects as a source of funding for political parties.
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today",
"This issue may be agreed upon, which is that most of the investment companies in Iraq are companies affiliated with the parties in power, and that
quotas have squandered Iraqi wealth through the rentier nature of the state, which the structure of the regime has led to its dissipation over the past years." He stated,
"Therefore, the parties insist on entering the government in order to benefit from the state's resources, as well as in the events in Iraq after targeting restaurants that carry American brands." He pointed out that
"the conditions in Iraq are an unsafe environment for investment after the inability of the security forces to protect investors.
Therefore, investment companies do not have a powerful party or armed groups to protect them." He added,
"The information indicates that the parties in Iraq have economic committees, and
they obtain investment opportunities through their ministers in the government, because most investment contracts are subject to the (lobbies) of the ruling parties, which now control the opening of tenders and selling them through brokers approved and known by them in the government."
“Holding these committees accountable will be a fantasy because it is not possible to prove any evidence against them, in addition to the strength of their influence.”
Regarding the profits of these companies, the researcher in political affairs stated that “there are no accurate figures, as Iraq is classified among the most corrupt countries in the world, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index issued by Transparency International, which confirms that the country is suffering from a worsening problem without the organization specifying precise figures for the size of corruption.” Corruption in the country, and
in September 2021, former President Barham Salih revealed that Iraq’s money derived from oil since 2003 amounts to about a thousand billion dollars, and that
estimates indicate that the money looted from Iraq abroad is estimated at about 150 billion dollars.”
Independent researchers and representatives confirmed in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that the
so-called “operating contracts” obtained by political parties in government projects generate huge sums of money for these parties, considering that their money is capable of “rebuilding Iraq again.” "
