The Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced today, Monday, that
Iraq has become an attractive corridor for international countries, as she indicated the
desire of four Gulf countries to pass their cables through Iraq. Al-Yasiri explained that
“submarine and transit cables enhance Iraq’s position at the international level, making it a safe and reliable corridor compared to the Suez Canal and the cables passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea.” She added,
“A contract was signed with Gulf Cables Company, a subsidiary of the Saudi STC Company, to lower the third submarine cable to Iraq, and
it was also previously signed with the Kuwaiti company Zajil.” She confirmed that
“the Ministry is currently conducting contractual procedures with the Emirati Telecommunications Company and the Omantel Company, in addition to offers from the Qatari company Ooredoo and the Bahraini company, Beetle Call,” noting
“the serious desire of the Gulf countries to contract to pass their communications through Iraq.” Al-Yasiri explained that
“submarine cables are not necessarily owned by the Gulf countries only, but some of them are owned by international companies such as Vodafone, MTN South Africa, Facebook, and China Mobile, and these cables reach Iraq through the Al-Faw region via the Arab Gulf countries.”
