Tens of Babel Province citizens marched in a demonstration, on Wednesday, to demand maximum penalties against Iraqi Vice-President Tarek Al Hashemi and his bodyguards after an arrest warrant was issued for Hashemi over terrorism charges.
“Tens of Al Imam District citizens marched in a peaceful demonstration this morning to demand maximum penalties against Iraqi Vice-President Tarek Al Hashemi and his bodyguards who are accused of terrorism,” protester Ahmad Hussein told Alsumarianews.
“Innocents didn’t die in vain,” Hussein stressed.
“Many of my relatives were victims of terrorism during these last years which is why I am calling for maximum penalties against Vice-President Hashemi and his bodyguards,” another demonstrator Mahmoud Ibrahim told Alsumaria.
Demonstrators held signs saying “Tarek Al Hashemi and Osama Bin Laden are a two-headed coin” and “we demand maximum penalties against criminal Tarek Al Hashemi.”
Iraqi Interior Ministry displayed, on December 19, confessions of Hashemi’s bodyguards assuring that he personally charged them to execute assassinations and bombings in Baghdad in return of money. Based on these confessions, Higher Judicial Council issued an arrest warrant for Iraqi Vice-President Tarek Al Hashemi by virtue of article 4 of Anti-Terrorism Law.
During a press conference held in Erbil on Tuesday, Hashemi blamed Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki for the terrorist charges addressed against him. I am ready to appear before court if my case was transferred to Kurdistan Region, Hashemi said stressing that he didn’t rebel nor sin against anyone.
It is legally not acceptable to send a force from Baghdad to Kurdistan to arrest Hashemi, Kurdistan Alliance argued noting that the alliance doesn’t mix between political issues and juridical resolutions while stressing the necessity to respect Iraqi Juridical resolutions.
