2 anti-Qaida paramilitary group members killed in Iraq's violence

BAGHDAD, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two Awakening Council group members were killed and two people wounded Monday in separate bomb and gunfire attacks in eastern and central Iraq, the police said.
A member of an Awakening Council group, or Sahwa in Arabic, was killed and a passer-by was wounded when a roadside bomb went off near his car in a town just northwest the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Also in Diyala, Iraqi security forces carried out operations across the province over the past 24 hours and arrested 12 suspects, including seven wanted individuals, the source said.
In northern central Iraq, gunmen shot dead a local Sahwa group member near his house in the city of al-Sieniya, some 220 km north of Baghdad, a local police source said.
The Awakening Council group consists of armed groups, including some powerful anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent groups which fought al- Qaida militants in the Sunni Arab areas after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
In addition, a policeman was injured when a roadside bomb struck his patrol in the town of al-Garmah near the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.
Earlier in the day, the police reported the killing of five people and some 39 others wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in the morning outside a police checkpoint near the Iraqi Interior Ministry compound in eastern Baghdad.
Iraqi cities have been plagued by several attacks, including suicide bombings, since the U.S. troops pulled
out of the country earlier this month.
