ERBIL - Iraq has launched a tender to buy 3,400 tons of gasoil a day for the next year, the Iraqi State Oil Marketing Organization said on Tuesday. The fuel will be used to fire power stations reports the Reuters news agency.
Gasoil is a product of crude oil refinery. It is heavier, more dense and viscous, than gasoline or naphtha and is therefore a cheaper product.
The provision of continuous power in Iraq is one of the biggest challenges faced by successive governments since 2003, despite the disbursement of $27 billion USD (31,500 billion IQD) by the ministry during the past eight years, according to the Finance Ministry
According to a document issued by the SOMO, the tender ends on Jan. 15 but can be extended.
Iraqis depend on generators to address the continuing electricity deficit that reaches up to 18 hours a day. Iraq needs at least 14,000 mega watts to meet the high demand for energy, while the country can only produce 7,000 MW.
