BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq's Parliament Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, has called on Monday for the necessity to keep the Iraqi Army away from political issues and to avoid its "attacks" against citizens.
"The Armed Forces must not be an item to fight the people," Nujeify said in an interview with the semi-official al-Iraqiya TV Satellite Channel, stressing that "the employment of the security forces is one of the practices of the political process, and the security forces must protect the people."
"The security forces must not follow a course, away from the Constitution," he said, adding that "the human rights in Iraq had suffered from intensive violations and had not been achieved through the political process, because such rights must develop under a correct environment."
Nujeify said: "we were hopeful that among the first motives would be to achieve public services and human rights for Iraqis, whilst we all look forward for the respect of the items of the Constitution, and to transfer them into the daily lives of citizens."
