Objections over 2012 budget

BAGHDAD, Feb. 1 (AKnews) - The government's Economic and Investment Committee has objected to the allocation of infrastructure projects within the 2012 budget, claiming that not enough detail has been given.
The committee says that the latest budget does not include enough information on spending - with the exception of the $2 billion allocated for housing.
AKnews reported yesterday that the government has allocated $15 billion (17.3 trillion IQD) for infrastructure projects in the 2012 budget, according to deferred payments.
This brought the budget's total to $115 billion (133.2 trillion IQD) from $100 billion (115.8 trillion IQD) with a deficit of $13.5m (15.6 trillion IQD) decided during an emergency meeting on last year on Dec. 5.
Committee member Nahida al-Daini said the government must show spending in detail to inform the Council of Representatives about it, adding that the Council of Representatives can not agree on the financial allocations without such information.
The Iraqi Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation says that delaying the adoption of the budget due to political difference affect directly providing services to citizens, prompting the department to call for speeding up the adoption of the budget.
Iraqi cities need money desperately to rebuild infrastructure destroyed by years of war, sanctions and violence. Citizens have protested over the lack of basic services that successive governments have not been able to provide for the last nine years.
The 2012 budget also includes granting financial loans to citizens for housing and farming purposes without financial benefits to help finding solutions for the housing crisis and revitalize the agricultural sector.
