There is a flurry of housing construction in the southern Iraqi Province of Babel of which Hilla is the capital, according to Governor Mohammed al-Massoudi.
Massoudi said three projects were to start soon at a cost of $51 million each.
“Each of these projects will comprise 616 housing units,” he said.
The importance of the three projects lies in their location as all are to be constructed in districts in the countryside.
So far such projects worth tens of millions of dollars have been solely the privilege of major towns, particularly provincial capitals.
Babel’s provincial center, Hilla, is also focus of a gigantic housing project with 20,000 units, Massoudi said.
Low-income families are reported to be given preferential treatment in owning the new houses.
Massoudi did not say how much the Hilla project was to cost and how much a family had to pay to own a house.
But he said prospective buyers will have to raise 20 per cent of the total price and pay the rest in installments.
