BAGHDAD, Feb.13 (AKnews)- The Iraqi president, prime minister and speaker of the house of representatives meet today with the committee tasked with organizing an emergency national congress. Mohammed al-Khaledi, a committee member, said that the officials will be submitted the packages of the Iraqiya List and Kurdistan Blocs Coalition for the expected congress.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani called for the national summit of the political leaders after tensions between Iraqiya, led by Ayad Allawi, and the largest bloc at the House, the National Alliance, deteriorated.
Iraqiya accused Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who is an NA leader, of “power monopoly” after the PM rejected the regional autonomy demands raised by Diyala and Salahaddin provincial council, which are dominated by Iraqiya deputies.
Iraqiya also boycotted sessions of the House and the Council of Ministers in protest to steps taken against some of its leaders. Deputy PM Saleh Mutlag was sacked after he described Maliki like “a destructive dictator”. Vice President Tareq Hashemi who is also a prominent Iraqiya leader is now wanted by court under terrorism charges.
National congress organizing committee has decided to meet Wednesday to unify the packages of Iraqiya and KBC and the proposals by the other blocs into one package, Khaledi said.
The committee met yesterday and decided that the issues and demands of each bloc should be classified, unified and addressed according to three headings; issues related to legislative authority, those related to executive authority and those of judicial authority concern “without going into details.”
The KBC among other things has demanded to enforce the suspended articles of an agreement in Erbil in November 2009. The agreement proposed by Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani and signed by major political leaders ended a nine-month political impasse and led to the creation of the current government under Maliki.
Allawi, whose bloc won the elections, was promised the headship of a National Council for Strategic Policies, due to be formed three months after the creation of government. So far neither the government has been fully formed nor has the Council been created.
This failure was the source of regular incriminations between Iraqiya and NC.
During yesterday’s meeting Iraqiya demanded that VP Hashemi’s issue be settled “without slander and politicization.”
Hashemi who has denied the charges has taken refuge in Kurdistan region and accused Maliki of complicating his case.
