BAGHDAD - The Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) does not wish to replace Baghdad Secretary Saber Isawi, adding that reports of the nomination of a substitute are false.
ISCI member Ali Shabar said any notion that the National Alliance (NA) is trying to replace Isawi with MPs Baqer al-Zubaidi or Abdul-Hussein Abtan "is far from the truth".
"It should be noted that Iswai is still in his post and there's no intention to replace him," Shaber stated.
He added that the Baghdad Secretary post is the ISCI's share of government and the party does not want to replace Isawi "due to his efficiency in running the post and our [belief in] his firm answers to the questions inside the House of Representatives".
Isawi faced accusations of financial and administrative corruption from Integrity Committee member Sherwan Waeli. The charges included extortion, wasting millions of dollars on projects for the proposed Arab summit in Baghdad and signing several contracts with fake Chinese companies. Isawi appeared in parliament on two occasions to defend his ground.
Last week parliament decided to defer the vote on Isawi's sacking to early March due to a demand from the NA. The party said there are technical issues related to the sacking of the Baghdad Secretary.
