Erbil, February 28 (Rn) - The General Company for Ports of Iraq said Tuesday that Iraq will invite companies to bid for the construction of Kasr of the waves in the Gulf and in the first phase of the construction of the port of Faw, which cost up to six billion dollars.
Will be built south of the port city of Basra's oil industry in the country and after the project is delayed for decades because of the sanctions and war.
Iraq is planning to establish a modern commercial center in the Gulf since the eighties, but those plans stalled in the era of former president Saddam Hussein.
It quoted "Reuters" Omran Radi second Director General of the company that the Ministry of Transport will soon to get bids for construction of the breakwater, which is expected to cost about 400 billion dinars (340 million dollars).
Iraq relies on the ports of neighboring Kuwait in a large part of non-oil trade.
The establishment of a modern port part of the long-term plan to transform Iraq into a transportation corridor between the Middle East and Europe than the Suez Canal, through the re-construction of a rail link between the Gulf and Turkey is due to the colonial era.
The second "if that is achieved Faw port will be a major shift in transportation in the world, not only in Iraq. Will shorten the time from 20 days to three or four days to reach Europe."
The port will include sidewalks along the seven thousand square meters (23 thousand feet) to receive container ships. The length of the pier will be 3500 meters of general cargo.
And Iraq possesses huge reserves of untapped oil and puts since the eighties plans for development projects such as expensive Baghdad Metro line high-speed rail link between Baghdad and Basra.
The officials spoke repeatedly about the revival of such projects, but they did not make progress little since the US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein's rule in 2003.
