The big question that Iraq is facing today is about its future and the best route to be followed to become a nation that is stable and prosperous. This is a challenge not only for the country but also for the entire region — one that can be achieved only with the support of the Arab world.
Preparations are under way in Iraq to host later this month the first non-emergency Arab summit to be held in Baghdad in more than 30 years.
Undoubtedly, this meeting is of great significance as it is taking place following the dramatic changes across the Arab world. In addition, having it in Iraq signifies that the country does not stand in isolation of its surroundings.
Yet at the same time, violence has never completely been eradicated in the country. Almost 70,000 people died in violence from 2004 to 2011, according to official numbers.
The road ahead is painful and would need all the efforts and backup that Iraq requires. But if violence is still evident, then Iraq is still not on the road to recovery.
This has to be brought on the agenda as such a state of affairs affects the entire region.
