BAGHDAD, March 7 (AKnews) - President Jalal al-Talabani will head the Arab Summit in Baghdad while Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will represent Iraq.
Mariam al-Rais, a media advisor from the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Finance denied there was any pressure from Iran, who is said to have wanted the president to stay away from the summit.
"President Jalal Talabani will lead the Arab summit. Iran had no influence, nor did they support al-Maliki to take over the management of the summit," he said.
Media sources have reported that Talabani will leave for America, close to the summit, to visit the Mayo Clinic for a health check-up after undergoing surgery in Germany.
Other media reports allege that Iran had pressurized Talabani to leave for America citing health reasons, wanting Maliki to head the summit instead.
The Iraqiya List, had also announced that Talabani would not head the Arab summit due to pressures from Iran.
She added: "President Talabani will return from Washington just before the Arab summit."
The Arab summit in Baghdad on March 29 comes amid continuing tensions in the Arab region. It will be the first summit after the events of the Arab spring.
