Iraq to protect Sudan Pres. from Interpol, tightens security for Arab summit
Date : 3/15/2012
BAGHDAD, March 14 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it received no warrant from the Interpol to arrest Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir if he decides to attend the Arab Summit, due here on March 29.
The ministry issued a statement refuting earlier press reports that anonymously cited an insider of the ministry as saying that the Interpol demanded arresting the Sudanese president.
"The reports are totally groundless fabrications since there is no request from the Interpol in this connection. The safety of the Sudanese leader is 100 percent guaranteed as well as the safety of any Arab leader attending the summit," the statement stressed.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi government announced this evening it's tightening the security measures in the run-up to the summit.
The Baghdad security operations command imposed a curfew for all types of motorbikes as a precaution. The measure takes effect as of this Saturday until a further notice.
The announcement comes one day after the civil aviation authorities said the Baghdad International Airport will be shut down as of March 29 in preparation for the arrival of the top guests. (end) mhg.gb KUNA 150103 Mar 12NNNN
