Erbil, July 3 (AKnews) – Kurdistan’s two Islamic opposition parties have said they are willing to join the next regional government if it is based on consensus.
Representatives of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) along with fellow opposition faction - the Gorran (Change) Movement, met with their counterparts from the two ruling parties today – in the latest of a series of meetings - to discuss their integration in the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
“At the beginning of the meeting with the ruling parties, we talked about our participation in the government,” said Abdulsattar Majid from the KIG politburo, “to us, it is natural that we should be involved”.
But for Majid, the KIG’s involvement depends on the ruling parties’ willingness to form a consensual administration with a balanced distribution of power, so that “all parties can oversee the implementation of agreed reforms”.
The KIG, KIU and Gorran gave their support to a spate of public street protests in Sualaimaniya earlier this year – calling for the reformation of the regional government and accusing the ruling parties of corruption.
The government’s refusal to prioritize the demands of the protestors in parliamentary sittings prompted the opposition blocs to storm out of parliament and boycott future sessions.
The stand-off continued for several weeks before a series of meetings between all political players in the Kurdish parliament began in a bid to find lasting solutions.
For KIU politburo member, Abubakir Karwani, agreement on a package of reforms is the first necessary step in the process of integration.
“If we can agree on a package of reforms, and our counterparts agree to a consensual government, then the participation of the opposition forces in the government formation will be necessary to ensure their implementation”.
