BAGHDAD, May 4 (AKnews)- Iraqiya List, led by former prime minister Ayad Allawi, expects President Jalal Talabani to give them guarantees to enter the national conference of the political leaders.
"Iraqiya is waiting for Talabani's return [from the Kurdistan Region] to decide whether to participate in the national conference or not," said Hadi al-Dhalemi, spokesperson for Accord Front led by Allawi.
Dhalemi said Iraqiya's presence at the conference is not related to the agenda of the conference but whether Talabani can assure Iraqiya about the commitment of other parties to the previous agreements.
The national conference was called by Talabani months ago after Iraqiya boycotted sessions of the House of Representatives and an arrest order was issued for an Iraqiya leader, the Vice President Tareq Hashemi, over terrorism charges.
For long representatives of the major parties were divided over the agenda of the conference. Iraqiya later announced it will not attend the conference and the Shiite dominated National Alliance (NA) was allowed to draft the agenda alone.
Two days ago the NA handed over the agenda to Talabani. This was followed by a call from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for Iraqiya List to attend the conference. PM promised to fulfill all the demands of Iraqiya.
Iraqiya expects among others the PM to comply with the stipulations of Erbil agreement. The agreement initiated by Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani ended the government formation stalemate after almost nine months of dispute.
Under Erbil agreement Maliki was reinstated for the second term and Allawi, who won the majority in the elections, was promised the leadership of a National Council for Strategic Policies.
Failure to create the council led to incriminations between Iraqiya and PM's State of Law Coalition (SLC). Each party accused the other of violating Erbil agreement.
Iraqiya also increasingly complains of persecution of its members by security services.
