ERBIL, May 8 (AKnews) - The national partnership in Iraq is completely over due to PM Nouri al-Maliki's "unilateralist decision-making", said Iraqiya leader Ayad Allawi.
Allawi's statement came during a televised interview with Arabic Sky News. Allawi, Maliki's election rival, even threatened that he may demand to replace Maliki if he does not comply with previous political agreements.
The Iraqiya leader warned that the "complete termination" of national partnership in Iraq may lead to "big and serious risks".
He added that major players such as the Kurdish Blocs Coalition and Ahrar bloc are studying the situation in the country with Iraqiya.
Allawi said these parties have sent a letter to the National Alliance (NA), which nominated Maliki for the second term. The letter requires all of the "national partnership principles proposed by Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani" to be executed urgently.
In case the NA fails in fulfilling this demand "we will demand it to replace Maliki with another member of the alliance," added Allawi. "We'll support this option."
The same message was sent to the NA after Allawi, Barzani, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Sadr Movement leader Muqtada Sadr and speaker of the Council of Representatives Osama al-Nujaifi met a week past Saturday in Erbil. The content of the letter submitted to Ibrahim Jaafari was published two days ago in a government gazette.
The leaders threatened that should Maliki continue unilateral decision making, they will demand to withdraw confidence from the government.
Sadrist MP, Amir Kinani, also said Maliki was given a 15-day deadline by the leaders to implement the Erbil agreement articles. The letter directed to the NA is dated April 28.
The Erbil agreement proposed by Barzani ended a nine-month dispute over who should run the government following March 2010's elections. The deal, which was signed by all the major political party leaders in Erbil, reinstated Maliki for the second successive term.
Allawi, whose Iraqiya List won the elections, was promised a National Council for Strategic Policies in return for his concession over the PM post. The council was not formed and the PM's State of Law Coalition and Iraqiya began incriminating and accusing each other of violating the Erbil pact.
The arrest of Iraqiya members and supporters over charges of supporting the banned Baath party or plotting a coup against the government, as well the issuance of an arrest order for Vice President Tareq Hashemi of Iraqiya List over terrorism charges, have all deepened the political crisis in Iraq.
