Baghdad / Iraq's future,
said the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday that the political crisis in Iraq has undermined efforts to resolve the problem of the disputed areas between Baghdad and Erbil. Iraq is gripped by unprecedented political crisis days after the departure of U.S. troops by the end of last year because of an arrest warrant, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi and oil differences between Erbil and Baghdad and file sharing of power and conflict between blocs of Iraq and the rule of law. Ki-moon said in a periodic report issued by the United Nations Mission in Iraq that "the political impasse leads to impede efforts to resolve outstanding issues related to disputed internal boundaries." He said in a lengthy report, "I still believe that addressing these issues are still essential for the stability of Iraq in the future." Ki-moon urged political leaders to resolve the outstanding issues between the Governments of the Kurdistan region and Baghdad. The United Nations stands ready to mediate. He said that elections should be the province of Kirkuk. The provincial elections were held in Iraq in 2009 with the exception of Kirkuk, due to differences between the components on the mechanism for the distribution of seats on the components of the province.
