U.S. FIFTH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (NNS) -- The Iraqi Navy, Kuwaiti Coast Guard and U.S. Coast Guard conducted their first trilateral theater security exercise in more than seven years, Sept. 29.
The exercise consisted primarily of search and rescue and defensive maneuvers.
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Monomoy (WPB 1326) used a small boat to transfer members from Iraqi Swift Boat 307 and Kuwaiti Coast Guard Patrol Craft Marzouq during a personnel exchange.
A Kuwaiti helicopter and another Kuwaiti patrol craft joined Monomoy's small boat during the evolution.
"It was great working with Iraq and Kuwait members during the exercise," said Lt. Nolan Cain, commanding officer of Monomoy. "I look forward to future opportunities to build partnerships with them."
Overall, the exercise was an excellent display of the interoperability of forces within the Arabian Gulf.
Upon successful completion of the trilateral exercise, Monomoy transited to Umm Qasr, Iraq with Iraqi Swift Boat 307. This was the first time since Dec., 2011 that a U.S. naval warship had entered Iraqi territorial waters.
Monomoy is assigned to Commander, Task Force (CTF) 55, supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
