BAGHDAD, July 24 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Interior Ministry said Sunday it had captured "the biggest and most dangerous" Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist network in the country, responsible for around 100 killings of prominent political and security figures.
The 17-member network used silencers and explosives to carry out the assassinations of Iraqi public figures, and were arrested with plans for further targets they intended to eliminate, the Ministry's Director of Affairs, Maj. Gen. Ahmad Abu Raghif told a press conference in Baghdad.
The assassinated figures include Ali Al-Lami, chief of the Iraqi accountability and justice committee; which was in charge of investigating the actions of the members of the former Baath Party. Others include judges, senior army officers and state officials.
The group had also planned to break free Al-Qaeda convicts jailed in Iraqi prisons.
Iraqi security forces also uncovered a weapons, munitions and explosives factory belonging to the network. (end) mhg.sd KUNA 242134 Jul [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
