The Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation, on Monday, that 1.9 million people suffer from food deprivation in Iraq, noting that the poverty rate reached 23% in the whole country.
Said Undersecretary Mahdi Keywords in a press conference held yesterday, on the sidelines of the announcement of the report on food security and living conditions and reform the ration card in Iraq in 2011 in collaboration with the United Nations, said that "there are 1.9 million people suffer from food deprivation in Iraq," noting that "The number dropped by 294 thousand people in 2007."

"

He revealed Keywords that "the report suggested the existence of three alternative options for the reform of the ration card is cash transfers directly to the beneficiaries of the poor's 6.4 million people," while the included second option distribution ration card items for the poor through the smart card, "explaining that" the third option targeted poor through electronic food cards with alternative food baskets. "
For his part, the country representative for the World Food Programme in Iraq, Edward Kallon during the conference that "there are challenges facing the achievement of food security in Iraq, including poverty, rising food prices world, climate change and desertification," noting that "the face of these challenges require policies and effective programs by the Iraqi government" .
