BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A Global Peace Index (GPI), Wednesday has registered a retreat in the state of peace in the world in 2011, while Iraq had stepped one step forward to occupy the center (152), leaving the last place for Somalia, as the largest country in the world that lacks peace, noting that the threat of attacks and the possibility of terrorist acts of violence were the most prominent factors that led to the decline of world peace.
The report, prepared by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) and received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency has noted that that "Iceland is one of the main countries that went without progress in achieving the levels of peace science, to excel over New Zealand, Japan, Denmark, the Czech Republic.”
As for Iraq, which has occupied the (152) center, has made progress for the first time this year after it occupied the lowest rank of the cursor, leaving the last place for Somalia, as the largest country in the world that lacks the peace."
The report continued that "the index in 2011 highlights the particular categories of Arab States in the spring of this year,” showing Libya to hold the 143rd center, being the the largest drop, as it was ranked 83 in the classification; while Bahrain occupied the 123rd centre, which is the second largest margin in the lower levels of world peace; while Egypt occupied the 73rd, ranked 24.
Moreover, the turmoil caused by economic instability has also led to declining levels of peace in Greece (65), Italy (45), Spain (28), Portugal (17), Ireland (11).
"This year is the third year in a row that indicates the Global Peace Index (GPI), to a decline in the levels of state of world peace,” the report noted.
“The cost of this decline had reached 8.12 trillion U.S.dollars on the global economy in the world the past, the report stressed, "noting that" despite the decline of the state of peace in general, but the data this year have shown an increase in the state of peace in some areas - most notably the spending levels for military operations between neighboring countries."
It pointed out that "the African region and sub-Saharan occupied the lowest grades in the order of universal peace, as it contained 40% of the least peaceful in the world, particularly Sudan (151), Somalia (153), that lied at the bottom of the index, while North America saw a slight improvement since last year.
“Jumping Canada ( six centers in the classification of this year, while under the order of the United States (82) as it is unaltered, although the classification has improved from No.85 to No.82, " the reported noted.
The report added that "for the fifth consecutive year, is Western Europe more zones of peace, they come in most countries in the top 20 countries in the achievement of peace, while the four countries of the Nordic countries among the top ten centers; however, has declined Sweden ranked number 31 because of the military and the volume of manufactured exports of conventional weapons.
In addition, accession to the European Union has had a positive impact on some Member States from Central Europe and Eastern Europe, where the Czech Republic took the lead in the top ten countries ranked (fifth place) for the first time when Slovenia was occupied the tenth place."
