Shafaq News / Ministry of Peshmarga in Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced, on Saturday that it filled the gaps left by the Iraqi army in the disputed areas in Kirkuk , Diyala and Salahuddin provinces , fearing that armed elements might sneak to these areas, stressing that the goal is to protect all national and religious components in it.
“The Iraqi army left most of the military bases and the headquarters of the military units affiliated to brigades 5 in Diyala , 4 in Salahuddin and 12 in Kirkuk, especially at night for fear of attacks carried out by armed group,”" A statement of the Secretary-General of the Ministry , Jabbar al-Yawar reported for “Shafaq News”.
“The unfortunate events in Hawija city and the confusion state in general situation and security in most areas of Diyala, Salahuddin, Kirkuk and Nineveh provinces led to create a state of panic and fear among the citizens in those provinces in general and citizens in Kurdish areas outside the region in particular”.
“In order to protect the lives of citizens in all their national, social, religious and sectarian components and after consultation with the governor of Kirkuk, it was decided that Kurdistan’s Peshmarga forces would fill those gaps in general and the area around Kirkuk, in particular”.
The statement noted that “the intelligence information of the ministry refers to the intention of these groups to carry out major terrorist operations, especially within Kirkuk city “, pointing out that “Peshmarga forces believe that its duty is to protect the lives and property of citizens and fill the vacancy”.
The statement stressed that “our troops have no intention to enter Kirkuk and other cities and do not have any political goals behind these plans”.
Peshmarga forces refer to armed Kurdish fighters.
It is worth mentioning that the Iraqi army forces stormed the Sit-in square, of Hawija protesters in Kirkuk province raised the anger of demonstrators and protesters in nearby provinces and that made them target the army , police and the Awakening forces affiliated to the government, which resulted in many casualties on both sides.
The Sunni minority complains from marginalization since the fall of the former regime in 2003 and accuses Maliki’s government of using unfairly anti-terrorism and de-Baathification laws against them, but al-Maliki stresses that he applies the laws and the Constitution.
It is worth mentioning that sectarian tensions in Iraq in 2006 and 2007 claimed tens of thousands of lives and almost turned into a civil war.
