UNHCR to build homes for returning refugees, says minister

Erbil, Aug. 2 (AKnews) – The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is currently constructing 1,000 new homes in Baghdad for Iraqi refugees abroad returning to their homeland, with further housing projects in the pipeline, says the Iraqi Minister of Migration.
Dindar Doski told AKnews that the UNHCR’s housing projects came about after a call from the Migration Ministry to initiate strategic support initiatives to help the Iraqis returning from their exile abroad.
At least a million Iraqis fled the country following the 2003 US-led allied invasion of Iraq and the sectarian violence that ensued. A further 1.5 million Iraqis were internally displaced.
Doski said that his ministry has requested Salahaddin, Diyala, and Nineveh provinces to allocate land to the UNHCR for further housing projects where they are most needed.
