Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf met on Thursday 04/08/2011 with the Iraqi official delegation visiting Egypt. Dr. Ahmed El-Borai, Minister of Manpower attended the meeting that discussed the settlement of debts of Egyptian workers in Iraq, where it was finally agreed that Egypt will receive USD 408 million.
The meeting discussed ways to settle the debts of some Egyptian government and private companies and agencies.
The meeting also discussed ways to develop the strategic relations between Egypt and Iraq, while activating the partnership between the two countries.
Several Egyptian-Iraqi meetings were held on Thursday 04/08/2011 to reach a settlement to the Iraqi debts to Egypt, Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Ambassador Mohammed Qassam said.
The meetings, held under Qassam and Iraqi Foreign Undersecretary Labid Abawi, probe preparations for the Egyptian-Iraqi higher committee, to take place in Baghdad within the coming period.
Iraqi debts to Egypt are divided into two categories: the first is the "yellow remittances" referring to the dues of the 637,000 Egyptian workers who fled Iraq following the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the eruption of the Gulf War in 1991 leaving their money and businesses behind.
The second is debts owned by some Iraqi governmental and private bodies to the Egyptian companies.
