Ban thanks Kuwait''s "positive" support of Syrian people

KUWAIT, June 3 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in a letter to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has praised the State of Kuwait's "positive role" in alleviating suffering of the Syrian
people.Ban commended Kuwait's relief supplies to the Syrian people who were suffering from "tragic conditions" due to the conflict in their country that killed more than 80,000 people and displaced millions others within Syria and
in neighboring countries.

The letter was reviewed Monday by the cabinet ministers during their weekly meeting at Bayan Palace, chaired by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, said minister of state for cabinet affairs
and minister of state for municipal affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah in a statement.

Kuwait hosted an international donors conference for the Syrian people last January 30 and pledges exceeded the USD 1.5 billion target set by the UN for the first six months this year. Kuwait donated USD 300 million.

Meanwhile, deputy prime minister, minister of finance and acting oil minister Mustafa Al-Shimali, finance ministry undersecretary Khalifa Musaad Hamada, and Managing Director of Public Investment Authority Bader Mohammad

The cabinet hoped more efforts would be exerted to attract foreign capitals to invest in Kuwait, and to boost the country's economic openness policy to transform Kuwait into regional economic and political hub, said Sheikh Mohammad.

On other matters, deput premier and foreign minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah briefed the cabinet members over the recent visit of Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal which was part of consultations between
leaderships of the two countries.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled then briefed his colleagues over his talks with the UK Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt which dealt with regional and international matters of mutual interest.

The foreign minister also talked about a recent visit by Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari, and their talks over recommendations of the UN committee mandated with demarcating borders between Kuwait and Iraq, with
regards to the maintenance of border signs.

The cabinet took note of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Kuwait and Iraq over preparations for maintenance of border signs in line with UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 833 of 1992. The MoU aims at carrying out maintenance of border signs, protection of international boundaries in line with resolution 833, as well as forming a three-member technical committee tasked with inspecting, maintaining and repairing the border signs on an annual basis.

The cabinet welcomed the MoU, and assigned the foreign ministry finalize all measures to formally submit it to the UN in line with article 102 of the UN Charter.

On the other hand, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled briefed the cabinet over yesterday's GCC foreign ministers' meeting, and a joint meeting between foreign and finance ministers. The meetings discussed a number of issues including strategic dialogues and negotiations with economic organizations.
