Shafaq News / The Independent Higher Electoral Commission (IHEC) in Iraq announced on Monday, completing preparations for local elections in Anbar and Nineveh
, while stressing the ratification of the election system of the President of Kurdistan Region and the regional parliaments’ candidates.
“We have completed all the logistical and technical preparations to hold elections of Anbar and Nineveh’s’ councils, as scheduled after receiving security reports,” The head of the electoral administration in IHEC, Meqdad al- Sharifi said at a news conference attended by “Shafaq News”.
The Iraqi Cabinet agreed previously on a proposal submitted by IHEC to advance the date of local elections in Anbar and Nineveh in current 20/6 instead next 4/7.
The Cabinet decided to postpone the elections in those two provinces because of the deteriorating security situation there following the protests wave in them.
For his part, the spokesman of IHEC, Safaa al-Musawi said in the elections conference of Kurdistan Region, that “the Commissioners Board has approved the election system of the President of Kurdistan Region, and the system of regional parliaments’ candidates”.
The opposition parties in Kurdistan object the re-election of President of Kurdistan region for a third term amid a divergence of views about his eligibility to nominate himself again.
The power parties (Kurdistan Democratic Party, led by Massoud Barzani and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan led by President, Jalal Talabani) confirm Barzani’s eligibility to run for the presidency in the next elections because he was elected by the citizens at the second cycle, while chosen in the first round by the Parliament.
But the opposition refuses to do so, and says that Barzani headed the post for two electoral cycles according to the stipulated laws in force in Kurdistan.
Kurdistan government announced earlier that it will hold parliamentary elections, the presidential and local council’s elections, all in 21 of next September.
