New Delhi: Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister of Iraq, is expected to visit India later this month, a person close to the development said, strengthening the renewal of the high-level contacts between the two countries that had declined during the years of war in the Arab country.
Iraq is currently India’s second-largest supplier of crude oil after Saudi Arabia, after displacing Iran, which has been under sanctions for its nuclear programme.
The invitation to al-Maliki was extended during the visit to Baghdad in June by Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid. That was the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to the country in two decades.
Last month, India’s petroleum minister Veerappa Moily visited Iraq for the 17th joint commission meeting that focuses on economic and energy cooperation between the two countries.
India is also gearing up to host Salva Kiir, the president of energy rich South Sudan, which was formed after the formal bifurcation of Sudan on 9 July, 2011, the person cited above said.
