Maliki meets senior U.N official

BAGHDAD / NINA / Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki discussed, in his official office today Sunday 18, August, with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, the situation in the region, especially in Syria and Egypt.
A statement of the Prime Minister's Office quoted Feltman as saying he came to brief on the point of view of Iraq in the events of the region, especially the situations in Syria and Egypt.
Maliki confirmed according to the statement: "Iraq supports the efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria and an end to the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people."
Maliki called on the United Nations and the international community and the countries of the region to put pressure on the Syrian parties to sit at the table of dialogue and find a solution, warning of extremism and terrorism support of some of the parties in the region.
On the Palestinian issue, the Prime Minister said it was becoming increasingly complex and the solutions do not succeed unless the Palestinians feel that it is just and equitable solutions.
For his part, Feltman confirmed that he is completely agree with the prime minister's point of view about the situation in Syria. He believed that Iraq must be involved in any international conference on Syria, adding: "The United Nations is seeking for the success of the US-Russian initiative on Syria."
The UN envoy expressed the readiness of the United Nations to support Iraq in its efforts to host Syrian refugees who said: "that their number reached 160 thousand refugees." / End
