The UN condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s tragic events in Camp Ashraf

Baghdad (NINA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, strongly condemns on Sunday, Sep. 1, tragic events in Camp Ashraf, which reportedly led to the killing and injuring of several camp residents.
“The priority for the Iraqi government is to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured and to ensure their security and safety against any violence from any side”, Mr. Busztin said.
The UN Envoy also called on the Government of Iraq to quickly set up a board of inquiry to establish the facts and disclose the circumstances surrounding today’s events.
“UNAMI, under its humanitarian mandate, is closely following up on developments on the ground, and is using all possible means to conduct its own assessment of the situation”, Mr. Busztin concluded
Source at the camp told NINA on Sunday that a force from the 36th military brigade supported by SWAT force attacked at dawn Sunday, the Ashraf Camp, in which member of the Iranian opposition mojahedin khalq organization (MKO), using all kinds of weapons killing tens of them and taking others to an unknown place.
He added that prior to storming the Camp, at about mid night; the force mortar shelled it for about an hour, then stormed the Camp using all kinds of weapons killing tens and taking others to an unknown place.
The Ashraf Camp contains about 100 MKO members after having moved most of them to Freedom Camp, near Baghdad International Airport, in preparation to move them to a third country. / End.
