The Deputy Head of Mission of the Spanish Embassy in Iraq, Mr. Ramon Molina Llado, met Minister Falah Mustafa yesterday to seek ways of further developing the existing relationship between Spain and the Kurdistan Region.
During their meeting, Mr Llado underlined the importance that his government places on its ties with Kurdistan and expressed hope of broadening economic and cultural ties. He commended the role played by the KRG Representation in Madrid in promoting the Region in Spain and said: ‘I hope that through an increase in relations Spain can become closer to every Kurdish person and this can be done through cultural activities.
Speaking about the role of the Spanish Embassy in Baghdad, Minister Mustafa said, ‘Your embassy has been working hard in building stronger relations between Spain and Iraq as a whole as well as between Spain and the Kurdistan Region in particular.’ He added that the recent high-level delegation headed by KRG Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Imad Ahmad, is a testament to the growing relationship.
‘I believe that our visit to Spain helped properly cement these relations and we were greeted warmly and openly by both the Spanish government as well as Spanish companies,’ he added.
Both sides discussed ways of enhancing relations between universities, institutions and the private sector. Minister Mustafa also highlighted the continued influx of refugees to Kurdistan from Syria, calling for more assistance from the international community.
He also asked to convey the KRG’s appreciation to the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, for his active role in seeking official recognition in Spain for the heinous atrocities committed against the Kurdish people in Iraq by the former regime.
