Electricity workers in Iraqi Kurdistan protest on delayed payment of their salaries
Iraq, February 11, 2014
The staff and workers of electricity and water departments in Sulêmanî [Sulaimaniyah] city in Iraqi Kurdistan region protested on Monday in front of their departments against the delay in the payment of their salaries for January, causing the closure of one of the main streets in the province.

Haober Kamran, an employee of the Electricity Department said that "they did not receive their salaries for January and here is February approached and there are no serious solutions to solve their problem."

He added that "the workers and employees of the Department of Electricity rely mainly on government pay checks because they have no other income due to the constant day and night work, in addition to night shifts."

The staff of Sulaimaniyah office have also protested similar to the staff of other government departments in protest against the delay in the payment of their salaries for the past month.

While employees in other departments of Sulêmanî joined their peers on strike action if there is no solution to the problem of delayed payment of salaries.

Dozens of protestors have rents to pay.

However, the delay in salaries reflects the failure of financial management in Kurdistan region.

Meanwhile in Erbil, the Kurdistan Regional Government KRG Ministry of Finance released a statement on Monday and announced," the reason for the delay of February's salary of KRG employees is that the Iraqi Ministry of Finance has not send the budget of January yet."

Rashid Taheer, the KRG Deputy Finance Minister, in a press conference regarding this issue announced that Baghdad sent the budget for the January in the middle of the month which is late and totally messed up our monthly salary distribution schedule. We started the distribution with the salaries of martyrs` families and retirements as soon as we got the budget.

"Today, both ministries of Religion Affairs and Health are distributing salaries and tomorrow the Ministry of Transportation is supposed to distribute their salaries."

Taheer also stated that KRG is still waiting for February's salary of its employees.
