He said Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain al-Shahristani said the Kurds had agreed to export crude oil from their region's autonomous through the State Oil Marketing Organization SOMO. And may help remove a major sticking point in the dispute between the two sides.
He traveled Kurdistan Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources in the region to Baghdad on Monday to promote efforts to settle the dispute with the central government regarding the region's oil exports through a new pipeline up to Turkey.
The government of the Kurdistan region has insisted in the past that you export the crude on its own terms, surpassing State Oil Marketing Organization SOMO Iraq.
Shahristani said in an interview broadcast on Iraqi state television late Wednesday that after hours of meetings, the two sides agreed on the representation of our brothers in the Kurdish region in the institution Sumo and that this port is the only national responsible for the export of oil. He added: "This is an important step forward."
Baghdad had threatened to sue Ankara and reduce the share of the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi budget if exports flowed through the pipeline without its consent.
And the establishment of the line was completed late last year, and began pumping oil in it since then to storage tanks at the Turkish port of Ceyhan, but exports did not depart from the port to provide an opportunity for diplomatic efforts. The negotiations lasted several months, but have made little progress.
