Kurdistan Regional Government faces $44m electricity bill

Erbil, Aug.20 (AKnews) – *****Government institutions in the Kurdistan region have run up a combined annual electricity bill of $44,536,000.
*****Of the three provinces that make up the region (Erbil, Duhok and Sulaimaniya), Erbil ran up the biggest bill with $30,719,000, government documents reveal.*****
The industrial, trade and agricultural sectors are due to pay more than $7,813,000 million in electricity charges.
Domestic users will foot the remaining $19,478,000.
Kurdistan Electricity Minister Yasin Abu-Bakir told AKnews that this year, his ministry will benefit exclusively from the total $71,839,000 revenue generated from the region’s grid.
“No one will be exempt from the due charges,” Bakir warned.
The Ministry of Electricity will however offer users with the biggest debts to pay them off in installments.
But those who fail to respect the time limits specified for payment will face “tough sanctions” the minister said, without offering any details.
