Iraqi Kurdistan governmental employee's salary for May delayed, April not given yet
Iraq, April 30, 2014
Spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) says that they do not know when the governmental employ's salary will be distributed.
Governmental employee salaries have been under the mercy of the failed economic policy of the KRG for the last five months since Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki's threat to cut the Kurdish share of the national budget. Maliki refused to provide salaries until the exportation of oil is not done through SOMO.
Since the beginning of 2014, Erbil and Baghdad have held several meetings to discuss how to export Kurdistan's energy to Turkey but they have failed to reach an agreement, hence Maliki decided to cut the budget.
Though several days are left to May, there are many directorates in the Kurdistan region who have not received their salaries for March and the resulting demonstrations have become very normal.
Safeen Dizayee, KRG spokesperson, told the independent Kurdish Hawlati Newspaper that after they provide salaries for the Peshmerga Ministry, the KRG will start distributing May's salary from the internal incomes of the KRG and reduce internal expenses.
“I do not know when the salaries for May will be distributed. It will be given according to KRG's Finance Ministry schedule,” Dizayee said. It "will be delayed because of the delay in April's salary.”
The Central Government have only sent January and February salaries.
Iraq's Commerce Minister Khairallah Hassan Babeker said they will not hold meetings until after the elections are finished because of the official holidays.
Khairallah confirmed that Baghdad will not send March and April salaries and that the KRG must solve the problem.
Nechirvan Barzani, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Deputy President and the caretaker Prime Minister of the Kurdistan region, said in his Party's election campaign in Duhok that salaries for May will be delayed but will not remain unpaid.
