Baghdad, Aug.30 (AKnews)- *****Next week parliament will from a committee to prepare a bill for amendments to the Iraqi constitution, parliament decision-maker said today.*****
Prominent politicians demand modifications to many terms of the constitution. *****Among them is PM Nouri al-Maliki who has been calling for the amendments since 2009 so that his aspiration for a ‘strong central Iraqi government’ is supported by the constitution. *****
Many articles are still vague and cause disputes between parliament and government as well as among the political blocs.*****
Next week as the MPs assemble for the regular sessions after summer recess the committee will be formed, Mohammed al-Khaledi told AKnews.
He described the mission of the committee ‘difficult’ due to the disputes over many articles.
Another committee tasked with the same mission was formed in November 2006. It ratified the proposals on the basis of political consensus not voting.
Although the 29-member committee said it has found a solution for nearly 51 disputed articles, many observers believe these articles are not controversial and can be easily agreed upon.
Among the challenging articles is article 140 which is to determine the fate of some areas whose ownership is disputed between Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
The article had to be completely implemented by end of 2007. Some parties consider the article annulled while Kurds demanded its implementation disregard of the expired deadline.
