A group linked to the Islamic State claimed the kidnapping of a French hiker Sunday in a video that has been authenticated Monday by the Quai d'Orsay. The kidnappers threatened to kill him if new raids in Iraq.
Hervé Gourdel, the French national of 55 kidnapped Sunday in Algeria, is, according to a video posted on Monday, authenticated by the Quai d'Orsay, the hands of the Soldiers of the Caliphate (Jund al-Khilafa). This terrorist group, led by Abdelmalek Gouri, aka Abu Khaled Suleiman, announced last week it had broken with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) which he was one of the most important commanders, to swear allegiance to the organization of ' Islamic state in Iraq and the Levant (EI).
The video, titled "Letter soldiers caliphate in Algeria to France Holland dog," begins with images of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi calling the "brothers of faith around the world" to "cope with the new crusade "led by the United States and France. We see Hervé sitting in the middle of two men face hidden by chèches Gourdel, armed with a Kalashnikov, calling the French president to "stop the attack within 24 hours" lest its national "slaughtered." Hervé Gourdel, wearing a yellow and blue sweatshirt, then reads a message François Hollande: "I was born in Nice on September 12 1959 I'm high mountain guide and I arrived in Algeria on September 20th and I am yesterday at the hands of an Algerian armed group. I urge you, Mr. President, do whatever is in your power to get me out of this mess. "
Hours earlier, the IE, speaking through his spokesman Mohammed al-Adnani, had appealed to his followers to kill "any way" citizens, "particularly nasty and dirty French" and countries conducting strikes against its positions in Iraq.
Monday early evening, the French Foreign Ministry confirmed the kidnapping, details were given by the Algerian authorities. "The threats made by the terrorist group demonstrate once again the extreme cruelty of Daech and those who claim it, denounced the Quai d'Orsay. Everything is implemented in close cooperation with the Algerian authorities to secure the release of our compatriot. "Laurent Fabius admitted, however, that" the situation is extremely critical, "adding that there is" no question of giving in to threats of a terrorist group. French hostage taking will not prevent France to participate in the coalition against the Islamic state. "
Hervé Gourdel was in a car with Algerians, when it was "intercepted by individuals" to 21h, up to the village of Ait Ouabane in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou. "The attackers, after releasing his Algerian comrades and abandoned the vehicle at the scene, kept the French citizen and fled in an unknown direction," says the Quai d'Orsay. In the late afternoon, according to security sources, Major General Ahmed Bousteila, head of the Force, would have gone on-site emergency helicopter. According to residents, a heavy security was deployed. Following the kidnapping, François Hollande met with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal. "Our services are in constant contact and the authorities act with our full support," said the statement from the Elysee.
The region of Tizi Ouzou, where was Hervé Gourdel, is known to be the stronghold of AQIM mountainous region. Sunday, military sources said they had killed a former emir of the GSPC, known by the nickname El Mancho in an ambush. During the presidential campaign, in April, are fourteen soldiers who were killed in a terrorist attack while returning from an operation to secure the ballot. This heavily wooded area is also frequented by bandits who in recent years have kidnapped and killed several Algerians.
