International (Forat) -Any military strike against extremists' targets should be carried out in accord with international law, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
Commenting on the U.S.-led airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant in Syria, the ministry said these actions must be approved by the Syrian government in advance.
"(International law) requires not just a formal warning about the strikes but a clear consent of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council's decision," the ministry said in an online statement.
Fighting terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa requires coordinated efforts of the international community under the UN auspices, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted the ministry as saying.
Otherwise, the attempts to achieve someone's geopolitical aims while violating sovereignty of other countries would increase tensions and further destabilize the situation, it said.
"Initiators of those unilateral military scenarios should take full responsibility for the consequences," the ministry added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also stressed the need for international coordination in the fight against ISIL during his telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon early Tuesday morning.
The United States and its partners began striking ISIL targets in Syria on Monday with a mix of fighters, bombers and Tomahawk missiles.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Washington had informed Damascus of the airstrikes before they started.
At present, about two thirds of the estimated 30,000 ISIL militants are based in Syria. The remainder have captured large parts of northern Iraq, although their momentum has been blunted there by U.S. fighter, bomber and drone aircraft. /End/ [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
