PUK issues not new: Qubad Talabani
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister and son of the Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) says that any internal issues within the PUK will not affect the KRG as they are nothing new.
In a press conference held after the ceremony swearing in the new governor of Sulaimaniya, KRG Deputy PM Qubad Talabani stated, “PUK issues won’t affect the KRG as they are not new and we are adapted.”
Commenting on the Erbil – Baghdad agreement, he said, “The agreement is that we [KRG] will export 300,000 oil barrels from Kirkuk Province as well as 250,000 oil barrels of Kurdistan Region per day via SOMO.”
Talabani continued, “The agreement is clear and the responsibility of both sides has been determined. For Kirkuk’s oil we have some technical issues in terms of linking the pipelines of the province to the Kurdistan Region’s pipelines, BasNews reported.
Therefore, we will discuss with the Natural Resources Minister how the issue can be addressed.”
He went on to address the question of the Kurdistan Region’s federal budget share, “An agreement has been signed that guarantees if Iraq’s budget of 2015 isn’t approved in the Iraqi parliament, then we will get 1/12 of Iraq’s 2015 budget.”
The price of petrol in the region looks set to remain an issue as the Deputy PM said, “When we decided to increase the price of petroleum, we were under pressure from Islamic State (IS) and in an economic crisis. Thus, the Erbil – Baghdad agreement will not have much impact on the price because the pressures remain today.”
He concluded by confirming moves towards the unification of Peshmerga forces under the control of the Peshmerga Ministry, “Previously, the former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani decided to bring the Peshmerga forces of Kurdish political parties under the control of the Peshmerga Ministry, unified as a force for the Kurdistan Region.”
“It needs the agreement and participation of all Kurdish political parties in order to successfully unify the Peshmerga forces under control of Peshmerga Ministry,” said Talabani.
