ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and an accompanying delegation will head to the United States Monday at the recent invitation of U.S. President Barack Obama, according to an Abadi spokesman. The Iraqi prime minister is expected to meet with Obama and top American officials to discuss the latest developments in Iraq, military advances against the so-called Islamic State and the War on Terror, the prime minister’s spokesman, Saeed Hadisi, announced Sunday. This will be Abadi’s first visit to the U.S. since taking office last August, and the strategic partnership between Washington and Baghdad to fight ISIS will be a key topic when the two leaders meet Monday. Abadi is reportedly hoping to convince U.S. officials to provide Iraq with more weapons and manpower just over three years after the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in December 2011. Obama authorized U.S. airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq in August. U.S.-led coalition airstrikes are backing central government Iraqi forces as well as Kurdish Peshmerga forces in different parts of Iraq, including ongoing efforts to drive ISIS out of Anbar province.
