WASHINGTON – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jibouri has met with US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, focusing on the conflict with Islamic State (IS) and the deepening humanitarian crisis in Iraq. Leading the talks was the news that President Obama has signed of on the deployment of 450 more troops to Anbar, where they will train and advise Iraqi forces, including local tribal volunteers. It was noted that this was a response to the five point plan put forward by the Iraqi Council of Ministers on May 19th.
Blinken stressed the importance of inclusive government in Iraq if the country is to overcome the current crisis, praising work done by Jibouri and Prime Minister al-Abadi and encouraging them to find ways to “foster cooperation and reconciliation across all communities.”
The Deputy Secretary concluded by appealing to the international community to contribute to the appeal for $500 million launched by the UN and partner agencies in Brussels last week. He noted the recent $200 million donation made by the US
