Iraq Bans Poultry Imports from US
7/2/15
Iraq has joined more than 30 countries in banning poultry imports from the United States because of bird flu, following the worst outbreak of avian influenza in US history. Bloomberg reports that the ban, announced on Wednesday, is to last for three months.
Figures from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that in the 12 months to the end of September 2013, exports of US poultry meat to Iraq rose to a record value of $104.5 million, making Iraq the 10th largest export market for US poultry meat.
In 2014, Iraq imported 710,000 metric tons of chicken meat, with domestic consumption at 832,000 tons.
Earlier this year, Iraq took action to limit the importation of poultry from Turkey.
