Iraqi parliament speaker meets with PM in Ankara
7/7/2015
Iraqi Council of Representatives Speaker Saleem al-Jubouri has met with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to discuss bilateral relations, and especially cooperation against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Only a few years ago, Turkish-Iraqi relations plummeted to a historic low following the American withdrawal of troops from Iraq in 2011. Relations are now on a path of steady recovery, however, as both Ankara and Baghdad expressed firm willingness to cooperate on tackling the ongoing militancy of ISIL as well as other issues concerning both countries. Turkey has offered military assistance against ISIL, including the training of Iraqi troops. ISIL captured Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, in a stunning attack last year as they swept through a large part of the country. Since then, Iraqi government forces, backed by Kurdish peshmerga and Iran-led Shiite militiamen on the ground as well as American-led air strikes, have struggled to defeat ISIL, with some degree of success. Caburi was received by Davutoğlu at his office in Ankara on Tuesday.
