Ex-Iranian President Rafsanjani praises US-Tehran negotiations

The US lifting crippling sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program would be a “giant step” forward in strained Tehran-Washington relationships and end three decades of hostility between the two countries, said ex-Iranian President and prominent political figure Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani Tuesday.
In an interview with the UK’s Guardian newspaper, Rafsanjani said that Iran had broken the “taboo” of direct negotiation with the US, adding that direct negotiation is better than talking through the media with each other.
“Iran is dead serious. If the other parties are as serious we will have an agreement for sure. That Iran is talking directly to the US is a good move,” he said.
Rafsanjani also identified the US’ long hostility with Iran as the main obstacle in reaching a nuclear agreement with the West.
“If we see a different US, it will have positive impact on Iranian public,” he said. He added opening a US embassy in Tehran is not impossible. “But that depends on the behavior of both sides,” Rafsanjani said.
