Baghdad calls on KRG to honor agreements with central gov’t

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Kurdistan Regional Government should remain committed to Baghdad-Erbil agreements to find a solution for existing disagreements, Iraqi officials said Friday.
Saad al-Hadithi, a spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, in an interview with Al-Iraqiya TV said there is no alternative to Erbil-Baghdad agreements and KRG officials should not renege on their commitments as articulated in their agreements with Iraqi authorities.
He added the central Iraqi government is committed to the agreements and nobody can look for a substitute solution because the 2015 state budget and financial legislation have already been signed by both sides.
On July 8, Arez Abdullah, chairman of the Iraqi Parliament's Oil and Gas Committee, told Rudaw that the KRG started independent oil sales in July. The independent crude oil sales include exporting oil from the Kurdistan region and Kirkuk oilfields without going through Baghdad.
“This is the beginning of the Iraq disintegration,” Abdullah said.
“Given the magnitude of the economic crisis in Kurdistan, the Erbil-Baghdad agreement is insufficient to solve the problems,” Kurdistan region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani told Rudaw.
Separately, KRG spokesperson Safin Dizayee told Rudaw the KRG decision to sell oil independently was made to resolve the economic crisis that has stricken the Kurdistan region. He added that the decision was necessary to pay government employees’ salaries on time.
In the last oil sales report, the Kurdistan Ministry of Natural Resources said due to the long-standing budget impasse with Baghdad it was obliged to increase its independent crude oil sales in June.
