Baghdad, Nov.18 (AKnews)- The file of missing soldiers and prisoners of war during Iraq-Iran war is passing through its final stages, spokesman for the Iraqi Human Rights Ministry said today.

After 2003, the file turned from a political to a humanitarian file, Kamel Amin told AKnews.

The eight-year long war broke out on Sept.22, 1980. Thousands went missing, amputated or killed in the meanwhile.

After its invasion against Kuwait in 1990, the former Iraqi regime was forced to speed up efforts to improve its relations with its eastern neighbor and released all the Iranian war prisoners.

Tehran claimed it took the same step and that there were no Iraqi war prisoners left in Iran. This is while the Iraqi parties have accused Tehran of withholding 3000 to 6000 Iraqi POWs.

Iraqi Human Rights Ministry spokesman, Mr. Amin, added a joint committee is investigating the file under the supervision of the International Red Crescent Organization.

"We dare say the file of missing people and POWs with Iran is on its way to be closed down as it is approaching its final stages," Mr. Amin said "The Iraqi side has some evidence and witnesses that require answers from Iran and the latter has a limited number of those evidence and witnesses.'
