TOKYO, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yukio Edano on Monday asked Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to help Japanese companies take part in developing oil fields in Iraq, Kyodo News Agency reported.
Japanese companies hope to win the right to develop the Nasiriyah oil field in southern Iraq, which is believed to be rich in oil reserves, and Al-Maliki responded to Edano's remarks by saying that Baghdad would offer the utmost opportunity to Tokyo, Kyodo quoted a Japanese official as saying.
During their meeting here, the two affirmed the need to enhance cooperation in the energy and other economic fields, it said. Al-Maliki expressed hope that Japanese companies would take part in developing infrastructure in Iraq and confidence in the improvement in security there, while Edano expressed Tokyo's readiness to contribute to Iraq's reconstruction with Japanese technologies and financial resources.
"We intend to solidify the win-win relationship (between the two countries) by meeting Iraq's demand linked to its reconstruction in terms of technologies and funds," Edano said after the talks.
Speaking at a meeting of government officials and business leaders from the two countries, Edano added that the Japanese government intends to offer the greatest possible support for the development of infrastructure in Iraq, adding resource-rich Iraq is an important partner from the perspective of Japan's resource diplomacy.
Al-Maliki said at the meeting that the door is fully open for investment by Japanese companies in Iraq and that the nation intends to take necessary steps to support the move. The two countries' cooperation could be seen not only in the oil and gas fields but also in the development of infrastructure, such as railways, harbors and roads, he said.
