Jalal Talabani, President of the free and democratic Iraq, has told the 66th UN General Assembly that his country “has been liberated completely and has regained full sovereignty”. He said Iraq has successfully rebuilt “following three decades of war by the former dictatorship” and that the “Iraqi people are grateful for the assistance” provided by the international community. Talabani mentioned the US and its allies in particular, saying “they stood with Iraq” in time of need. In his final remark, the President declared that his country “looks positively into the future“ build on “democracy, plurality and peaceful coexistence of different ethnic and religious groups”.[b]
